  • You can enrol in and commence the full training program once you have held general registration (or equivalent overseas registration) for at least 2.5 years (or equivalent overseas registration or licensure). This is because before applying to become a Board-approved supervisor you will need to have held general registration for at least 3 years.
  • In order to be a principal supervisor of a psychologist in a registrar program you will need to hold an endorsement in the relevant area of practice for at least two years.

What is Board-approved Supervisor Training?

Psychologists who wish to provide supervision to provisional psychologists, registrars and higher degree placement students, must complete the required training to be a Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA)-approved supervisor. This training consists of three components completed sequentially (Part 1, Part 2 & Part 3). Once all three components are successfully completed, participants can apply to be accredited as a PsyBA approved supervisor, effective for 5 years.

The 3-part training involves;

Part 1 Knowledge Assessment

This is a self-directed learning component delivered online. The online learning component is broken up into 6 modules which map on to the 6 core competencies for supervision. Part 1 involves 8-10 hours of preparatory readings and reflections which are a prerequisite for the Part 2 in-person workshops. Key information about the knowledge and skills involved in evidence-based supervision are covered, as well as the relevant ethical and professional Board codes and policies and procedure for the different supervision programs offered in Australia. Participants must pass a knowledge assessment quiz to move on to part 2.

Part 2 Skills Training Workshop

The skills training workshop is an extension of Part 1 aimed at integrating knowledge with practical skills. Part 2 is focused on the development of supervision skills applicable to all supervisee pathways, including practical skills for evaluating competencies and developing reflective supervision practice.The skills training will comprise 12 hours of direct training over a two-day workshop, focused on integrating knowledge and practice. The training will focus on live practice of supervision skills, immediate trainer and peer feedback, and peer interaction and sharing of experience. In vivo demonstrations and roles plays are used to consolidate learning and build participants confidence to apply supervision skills.

Part 3 Competency-based assessment and evaluation

Part 3 requires the submission of an electronic video recording of an example supervision session and an accompanying analysis of the session demonstrating the 6 supervisor competencies and a reflective response (maximum 1500-word critique analyzing how you have met the core competencies and what could have been improved on or done differently).
Participants are assessed on their demonstration of supervisor competencies and provided a pass or fail grade and feedback.

Psychologists wishing to maintain their supervisor approval are required to refresh their training every five years by completing at least one Board-approved masterclass. A masterclass is a competency-based training workshop recquiring at least six hours of direct/live training.

Venue Information

As Part 2 is an online workshop, delivered live, you can complete the workshop from any location where you have access to a computer and a strong internet signal. The workshop will be delivered via Zoom and participants will be sent a url to join the training as well as information on trouble shooting technical issues, prior to workshop commencement. As the workshop has a strong practical focus live attendance is required (i.e., watching recordings is not a suitable substitute for live attendance).
